Cal Grant Update – Change to Eligible Institutions

There has been a change to eligible Cal Grant institutions. In an effort to balance the CA budget, institutions with default rates on federal student loans above 30% will not be eligible for Cal Grant awards for the 2011-2012 academic year. There is a list of schools affected and FAQ’s on the CASC website. Please visit www.csac.ca.gov for more information. Institutions in our area affected include ITT Tech, Carrington, and Kaplan College. No CSU/UC’s or public community colleges are on the list. Please be aware that it is “buyer beware” when you are registering at a career/tech school. Any school that requires you to sign a contract, should be researched thoroughly. Check their drop out rates, their loan default rates, etc. I will be out of the office most of the month of July; however, I do check my email periodically.
