Cal Grant Update – Change to Eligible Institutions

There has been a change to eligible Cal Grant institutions. In an effort to balance the CA budget, institutions with default rates on federal student loans above 30% will not be eligible for Cal Grant awards for the 2011-2012 academic year. There is a list of schools affected and FAQ’s on the CASC website. Please visit www.csac.ca.gov for more information. Institutions in our area affected include ITT Tech, Carrington, and Kaplan College. No CSU/UC’s or public community colleges are on the list. Please be aware that it is “buyer beware” when you are registering at a career/tech school. Any school that requires you to sign a contract, should be researched thoroughly. Check their drop out rates, their loan default rates, etc. I will be out of the office most of the month of July; however, I do check my email periodically. Sierra College has Introduced a Fall 2011 Semester Deadline

Sierra College has introduced an application deadline for the Fall 2011 semester. Students that intend on enrolling in Fall 2011 classes (which will be starting on August 22) will need to have applied for admission to the college by August 1. Students will still be given the option of registering in open classes until the start of the semester (August 22) but they must have applied to Sierra College by August 1. Students attempting to apply for admission to the school after August 1 will only be given the option of applying for the spring semester. Students that applied for admission in the months prior to August will still be able to register in classes until August 22 (if space is available). The college will be establishing application deadlines for subsequent semesters e.g.: January1, 2012 for spring 2012 and May 1, 2012 for summer. Be sure not to miss an important deadline!

Chico State Admitted Student Preview Day

California State University, Chico will be hosting its annual spring event, Admitted Student Preview Day, on Saturday, April 9 from 8am-3pm. This event is designed for admitted fall 2011 students and their families. It gives students a chance to visit campus, attend academic showcases and presentations, along with touring the residence halls. The day is free and students are encouraged to register by April 1 at www.csuchico.edu/admissions . For information call 898-4428.

Junior College Enrollment

If you’re planning to attend a local community/junior college in the fall, it is time to get started! You can apply online now for summer/fall 2011 classes. Visit the website of the individual community college you want to attend to apply and review all the necessary steps. After applying, you will need to complete an English and Math placement exam and meet with a counselor. If you need any help with the process, please see Mrs. Keeley in the Counseling Office.

Sierra College Enrollment for Fall 2011

If you are planning to attend Sierra College in the fall, you can apply online now. Go to www.sierracollege.edu to complete your application. After your application is complete, you can create a mySierra account. You must complete an assessment in Math and English prior to meeting with a counselor. If you have any questions, please come into the Counseling Office or go online to Sierra’s website and click on the “Apply & Register” tab.

Parent Information Nights @ Sierra College

Sierra College is hosting a series of parent information nights on the Rocklin campus in the spring semester. There will be six separate sessions (each from 6pm to 7pm) in the college library on the following dates: Wednesday February 2, Wednesday February 16, Wednesday March 2, Wednesday March 16, Wednesday March 30 and Tuesday April 12. If parents are interested in reserving a space they just need to email outreach@sierracollege.edu indicating which date they would like to attend.

FAFSA on the Web

A reminder that January 26, 2011 is FAFSA/Cash for College Night @ EN. Students with last names beginning with A-K will attend from 6pm-7pm and students with last names L-Z will attend from 7pm-8pm. This will give students & parents the opportunity to fill out the FAFSA online with the school’s reliable internet connection. There will also be a financial aid representative from Yuba College and myself in attendance to assist you. Students in attendance that submit their FAFSA’s that evening will be entered in a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship!

The FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Do not submit your personal financial information to any other site. There are other scam sites online. The federal application is FREE. Do not pay to submit your FAFSA.

The U.S. Department of Education has an online guide, Funding Education Beyond High School, available at www.studentaid.ed.gov/guide.

Scholarship Applications

Christmas break is a great time to work on scholarship applications. There are some new ones posted on the scholarship page. It’s a good idea to keep extra copies of your official transcript and letters of recommendation so you’re not scrambling for them at the last minute. For the applications that require essays, once you have one essay written you can usually adapt that for other applications. Be sure to save all the essays you write. You can easily cut and paste different essays together to save you time. Please come see me if you have any scholarship questions.

Upcoming Financial Aid/FAFSA Nights

We are coming up on an important time for Seniors in terms of financial aid for college. On Wednesday, December 1^st @ 6pm in the Multi-Use Room we will be having a Financial Aid night for seniors and their parents. We will be presenting an overview of the financial aid process, including information on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

We will also be hosting a Cash for College FAFSA Night on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 in the Computer Lab. Students with last names beginning with A-K will attend from 6pm-7pm and students with last names L-Z will attend from 7pm-8pm. This will give students & parents the opportunity to fill out the FAFSA online with the school’s reliable internet connection. I will also be in attendance to assist and answer questions. We will be handing out an information sheet listing the information you will need to complete the FAFSA at Financial Aid Night. All students who submit a FAFSA that evening will be entered in a drawing to win a $1000 scholarship.

I encourage every student to fill out the FAFSA by the March 2^nd deadline even if you do not believe you will qualify for financial aid. Many colleges use this application to determine their own aid packages and scholarships as well. Also, if your financial situation changes for any reason, your student may then make a change to their application.

San Jose State University declares all majors impacted

SJSU has declared all majors impacted for Fall 2011 undergraduate applicants. This means all applicants will be ranked based on their GPA in A-G classes and their SAT/ACT test scores. Official test scores are due no later than 12/22/2010. Preference will be given to local students graduating from a high school in Santa Clara County. On-campus housing is required of all freshman who will graduate from a high school located in a city outside of a 30-mile radius of San Jose State.

Seniors need to be aware that they are conditionally accepted based on on-going classes and an assumption that they will earn a C- or better in all A-G courses. Last year SJSU withdrew admission offers from 150 freshman, who upon final review of their transcripts, did not meet this requirement. Do not slack off Spring semester!
